Hidden Gems Interview Oct. 26, 2021

Though disappointed that life as a mermaid wasn't in the cards for her, Katherine Eddinger Smits obtained a master’s degree in social work and spent 20 years helping veterans and their families until she retired to pursue her obsession with writing.

Now she brings social work training and experience to her stories of mermaids, mages and magical creatures. Within the context of fantasy and romance, her novels explore real-life issues of self-acceptance, body image, relationship dynamics, and fears and phobias. Mystery, suspense, and a little sex add spice to her books.

She is the author of five novels where romance collides with supernatural suspense.

Katherine judged the Florida Writers Association Collections contest for several years. In 2021  and 2022 she also judged the FWA Royal Palm Literary Awards.

Katherine served as a guide for the Romance Writers of America inaugural 2021/2022 Pen to Paper program which mentors aspiring writers. In 2022 she is serving as the Pen to Paper Program Manager.

She also contributes to numerous blogs and publishes her own blog: Word Siren katherinesmits.wordpress.com/

Katherine and her husband divide their time between Florida and West Virginia. Their children and granddaughters live in Virginia.

Besides writing, Katherine is a "horse mom" to a feisty Irish Sport Horse mare, clog dances, and loves the beach.
