Lessons for the Heart
***** (5 Star)
Judith Kammeraad’s Teach Me Too (I Heart Book Publishing) is a sweet and sexy tale of redemption for injured souls. Lyla, damaged and still reeling from an attack at the school where she used to teach, seeks not only a job, but also healing at the DuPree Ranch, a combination alpaca farm, and orange grove. Mark DuPree, manager of the ranch, which he owns with his father, needs someone to teach his children. He has home schooled them since his wife died and other children bullied them at school. The ranch keeps him too busy to provide the education they need and his grief keeps his heart too locked down to offer them the love and care they require. As Lyla settles into the routine of the ranch, she glimpses secrets and lies beneath the idyllic surface and when tragedy strikes, it will take all her skill to find the lessons for her heart and the family she comes to love.
Layers of this book were slowly revealed as the story progressed, absorbing me from start to finish. It was like watching an intricate puzzle put together by a master, one piece at a time, fitted to the others to create the perfect picture. In the end, I was surprised, but also felt like everything tied together exactly as it must.
I also loved the setting of the book. Citrus County does in fact have orange groves and alpaca farms. It’s a little bit of old Florida, like the whole state years before tourists discovered the beaches and theme parks sprouted in the center of it. Florida is a natural paradise. Read this book for a taste of oranges, a glimpse of beauty, and a lot of love.
